I have had the privilege of working with two different Nicaraguan communities in Jinotega and Siuna, with Cornell Bridges to Community. Spring 2016 will be my third volunteer trip. As a Development Sociology major, service learning and participation in social change in these communities has been very fulfilling and enriching. Working side by side with local community members, we build schools, clinics, and other projects that lead to better health. Close engagement is key to working on projects that have long-term, sustainable, and empowering impact. One also develops enduring friendships and a deeper cultural understanding of Nicaragua and the developing world.

I am so glad that I found Bridges to Community, because it has truly been one of the best experiences of my life! This is an organization that is committed to impacting lives on an individual level, as you get to personally know and interact with the local community during your stay. Bridges is also committed to creating long-term sustainability in Nicaraguan communities that struggle to meet the basic necessities of life. During last year's trip I took down my Polaroid Camera and was able to give physical photographs to the parents and kids of Tadazna. It was unbelievable how much they appriciated such a little thing that I once took for granted. I can't wait to be apart of this amazing organization for another year :)

As a senior going into my fourth year with Bridges, I feel incredibly privileged to be part of such an impactful organization that changes the lives of not only the Nicaraguan families with whom we work every year, but also the volunteers who come out of their Bridges experience realizing what it truly means to be part of a community. As a volunteer, Fundraising Chair, Academic Director, and now Vice President, I have seen so many motivated and talented students transform a simple desire to make a difference, into a passion for service learning and community development. I am excited to see what our wonderful E-board will achieve this year, and beyond.

My experience with Bridges allowed me to meet many people from a culture and country that I would have otherwise never had the chance to engage with, some of whom I'm still in contact (and practicing my mediocre spanish) today! Getting the opportunity to engage with the community for a week gave me the chance to not only help out with a community's projects, but also exchange perspectives with local people on everything from our daily lives to international politics. Engaging and working in a completely unfamiliar environment with people whom have lived entirely different lives is an experience that I am very grateful for, and would recommend to many others.

Bridges to Community was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had! My absolute favorite parts of the organization were the strong connections I formed, both within the Cornell Bridges family and local community members in Nicaragua. The people I met through this organization are some of the closest friends I have. I cannot wait to build on our Cornell Bridges family this year!
