How has Bridges influenced where you are today?
My experience was Cornell B2C was invaluable, in so many ways. The service-learning in Nicaragua showed me what a successful, well-run cross-cultural non-profit looks like. The classroom experience was also highly instrumental in my development, as it helped me improve my communication and leadership skills while working with the executive board, and serving as liason between Bridges Inc and Cornell B2C. I learned the patience and understanding required when working with others from varying cultural backgrounds, which I have put to work in my past job as an AmeriCorps VISTA, and my current job--particularly when working on pro-bono cases with clients from outside the US. From the class management experience, I gained the confidence to assume autonomy and independence, which I have employed in my past and current job. In both professional experiences, I was/am the youngest individual in the work environment, yet I am able to comfortably work alongside those more experienced, and older than me. I credit Bridges in part to this sense of self which allows me to confidently assert my opinions.

How has Bridges influenced where you are today?
It hasn't influenced where I am today so much as my perspective on most things; the world has an amazing way of challenging the assumptions Americans grow up with. It isn't like Nicaraguan reality is any more true than American reality, but understanding that the converse also isn't true is enlightening.

What are you up to now?
I am heading to Oxford (UK) at the end of September to start my MPhil program in Comparative Social Policy.
How has Bridges influenced where you are today?
Going to Nicaragua and participating in BTC had a major impact on my life, both academically and socially. Firstly, I became interested in globalization, policy, and how these activities impact the lives of regular people in developing countries. This has helped me decide to study social policy in graduate school. I also gained a much deeper understanding of life outside my "bubble" of the United States and Japan- not only how we are different, but also how we all share many of the same aspirations and difficulties in life. I would love to go back to Nicaragua and the experience was truly unique and amazing.
